Why I do what I do
I have always been interested in art from watercolors as a child to oils in school and to acrylics as an adult. Sometimes the blank canvas can be intimidating. However, I read a book where the featured character grew her own gourds and then dried them and created art and musical instruments with them. I had to try it. One project and I was hooked. If you can imagine it you can create it with a gourd. I am constantly amazed at what my fellow gourd artists create. I love carving, creating relief or 3D illusions. Woodburning art has so many techniques it enhances other techniques or stands well on it's own. Painting is the most expressive art form on gourds. I have used leather dyes, gourd inks, alcohol inks, transparent inks, india inks, or acrylics. Fine art carving is difficult but rewarding, creating 3D illusions on the gourd surface.
I also like to be active in the societies of gourds.
I am a member of the Gourd Gypsies Gourd Patch.
I am President of the Lizard Flats Gourd Patch.
I will be President of the Arizona Gourd Society in 2024.
I am also a member of the American Gourd Society.
I have entered my gourds in American Gourd Society Sanctioned Competitions - mostly wtihin the Arizona Gourd Society. Over. the last 7 years I have won many ribbons and progressed from the Intermediate Level to the Master Level of competition. I hope some day to be a Grand Master Artist.
